Former England goalkeeper Peter Shilton is regarded as one of the popular names when it comes to opinions on players. He is one of the respected goalkeepers due to his achievements in the game. He currently holds the record for the most number of appearances made by any player for the England national team. He currently stands at 125 appearances for the national team after having played for a period from 1970 to 1990. At this club career, he represented the likes of Leicester City, Nottingham Forest, and Southampton before retiring in 1997 after having played more than 1000 matches.
After the retirement of Steven Gerrard from international duty, the subject of England captaincy has been thrown into much debate. Roy Hodgson was hoping to have the Liverpool captain playing for a few more years. However, the 34-year-old decided to focus on his club career. A number of candidates have been mentioned as potential successors to Gerrard. Shilton believes that Manchester City goalkeeper Joe Hart, who came close to losing his place last season due to poor form, can be an ideal captain.
The likes of Wayne Rooney have also been mentioned, but it is thought that Roy Hodgson would rather prefer a member of the defence to be the captain. Since making his debut in 2008, Hart has made 43 appearances for the national team.
"I had 15 chances for England to be captain and I'd like to think I did a good job. When you are captain of England it is about stature and leadership and not so much about changing things on the pitch, that was left to the manager. I would think there would be other postitions first but we have won cups as captain - Dino Zoff did it for Italy and I got very close, so it's not too bad a postition to captain from,” said Shilton.
